Face the Music Vocal Studio
About Us

Megan Laurence has been entertaining since the age of three, first for her family and friends and later for audiences in the Ottawa area. As a child, she performed various roles in musical theatre. Her greatest delight is interacting with people through her singing.

In 1994, Megan began entering many competitions and talent shows as a solo performer. Since then she has won many awards and titles. Among these are: Grand Champion Teen Vocalist on Homegrown Café, First place at Songfest, Overall Outstanding Vocal Student in the Montreal Music Festival (as well as six gold medals), First place in the Vocal Category and overall winner at Youth Talent Search at SuperEx.

At the age of 16, Megan began performing in area night clubs, where her interactive performances of all types of music -- standards, jazz, country, and contemporary - earned her the reputation of "Ottawa's best kept musical secret." Since then, she has entertained in Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, and the US.

A graduate of the Vocal Program at Canterbury High School, Megan began teaching vocal lessons in 2000. In addition to singing, she teaches performance skills, microphone techniques, theory, and stage presence. Her training in Psychology is an asset in her teaching.

For the past three years, Megan has been producing daily shows for the Ottawa SuperEx, especially the Giant Tiger Stage. The experience allows her students to make friends with each other and to perform in a non-competitive and collaborative manner. "It's amazing how the students grow in ability and confidence!"

Face the Music Vocal Studio

Face the Music officially began in 2005. Owner and teacher, Megan Laurence, wanted to give her students more opportunities to perform. Her first contract was with the father of one of her students, Jenner Hughes, who had signed an agreement with the Central Canada Exhibition for two daily shows on its Giant Tiger Stage. Megan initially formed Face the Music as a production company to produce the SuperEx shows.

Response to these shows was so positive, from audiences, SuperEx personnel, and students that Megan began Face the Music Vocal Studio so that she could teach students as she felt they should be taught. "Everyone who wants to sing should be given the training and opportunity to do so, whether his/her concert is onstage or in the shower."

No matter what your age, vocal lessons are a great way to discover new things about yourself.

Students are given their first taste of public performance in the twice-yearly, in-house recitals. Participation in these events is purely voluntary; no student is forced to perform. There are also local talent shows, community events, and charitable functions. For those who wish, there are various competitions, such as the Kiwanis Music Festival, Footloose, and SuperEx's Stars on the Rise. Students at these competitions have done extremely well with Face The Music sweeping this year's Footloose International competition taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the vocal category and also winning 9 platinum, 1 gold and 2 high silver medals.

The most popular event continues to be the SuperEx. Students begin with group numbers, in which they become comfortable performing with others. Friendships made during these performances last all year, and give the school a sense of family.
